Ruth Burnhill
Director of Nursing at Weldmar Hospicecare Trust, Dorset

Ruth trained at St Thomas' Hospital where her interest in palliative care began, observing the work of the first hospital palliative care team. After completing a course in oncology nursing at the Royal Marsden and becoming a district nurse, she worked in a nurse-led palliative care team at the Royal Free Hospital following patients from the hospital to home.

Looking for new challenges she took up the invitation to go to Milan, to work in the first public hospice at Pio Albergo Trivulzio, training nurses and, after a spell at the European Oncology Institute, was invited to set up a hospice in Biella, Piedmont recruiting and training the nurses before opening the Hospice. She completed her Masters in Advanced Practice in Oncology Nursing at Surrey University. Returning to England in 2004, she has since been working as Director of Nursing at Weldmar Hospicecare Trust, Dorset.
