Canon Ian Ainsworth-Smith
Adviser on Healthcare Chaplaincy, Diocese of Bath and Wells
Ian trained for the Anglican ministry at Cambridge University and subsequently in the USA. Following two curacies he worked in the National Health Service as Chaplain to St. George's Hospital, London between 1973 and 2006. During that time, he co-chaired the St. George's Clinical Ethics Committee and has maintained an interest in Research Ethics, currently chairing the Cornwall and Plymouth NHS Research Ethics Committee.
Ian has written extensively and taught in the area of Palliative Care, Bereavement and Medical Ethics. He was appointed an Honorary Canon of Southwark Cathedral in 1995.
Since his retirement to Somerset nine years ago, he has acted as Adviser on Healthcare Chaplaincy to the Diocese of Bath and Wells. On writing this, Chris realised that he has had contact with, and been influenced by, the Hospice Movement for over nearly fifty years! He is sure that its key values need to be cherished and upheld, but also that this is the time for some imaginative and constructive consideration of the future.
